Happy 150th Canada

Happy 150th Canada Day from the North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce.

I hope that everyone has had a great, first long weekend of the summer season.  I am also hoping that by the time this article is being read, that the we are enjoying a little drier and summer like weather.  Certainly, the first part of our summer has not been what we normally see and that the rest of our summer months are sunny and warm.  As your voice of business, The North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce wishes everyone a safe and carefree summer.

Over the past week, we have seen a few headlines that haven’t been great news for North Bay & District.  The cancellation of Porter Airline services from North Bay to Toronto and the loss of jobs with Bell Aliant are certainly not good news for our community but, we will survive.  The citizens of our area are a resilient bunch and we live in one of the most generous communities that I know of, or have lived in.

When it comes to giving, our businesses and citizens always dig deep to support so many causes.  Whether that is a capital campaign for worthwhile projects, charitable fundraisers for so many causes or just helping individuals who need that extra hand, North Bay and area seem to always come through. I truly believe that is one of the reasons that we live in this area…people care and matter!

I sometimes wonder what it will be like in 2067, when we celebrate our 200th birthday as a Nation.  Will it be the same as it is today?  Highly unlikely from a physical standpoint but the sense of community and caring for others in our area, I believe will still be one of the values and attributes that will last for years to come.  When our children and grand children celebrate Canada’s 200th birthday, I am confident that will be the case.

As we look forward to the next 50 years, one of my hopes is that as a community, we embrace our diversity, cultures, and a much more positive outlook.  We, as a community have so much to celebrate and cannot take that for granted.  Our quality of life in North Bay and area is outstanding and we need to work together as a community to ensure in 2067, it remains that way.

Happy Birthday Canada!

Peter Chirico is the President and CEO of the North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce
